Hi all! I am new here and jumping right in. I have a question. Is there a high weight limit on women in the WCL?
Thanks...

Thank you. That is what I thought. A bunch of short women is what is wanted here. That is disappointing. You leave a lot of good talent on the sidelines with that call. Maybe that limit will change. My wife fights using Dragon Kung Fu and wins a lot.
Thanks again for your help. National Black Belt League here we come.

I had to sign up after reading this. I am a female fighter for Kyokushin Karate and am 130lbs and 5.5 tall. I would have no problem making the weight but I think the weight needs to be reevaluated. Sometimes I am fighting in 150 and under divisions. If a fighter is good 20lbs wont make a difference. Why not open it up for some more talent! |

Any sanctioned event - in any state has their own rules as to how much weight difference is allowed per each division.
Some states it is 9 lbs. meaning that even if both parties agree to let a fight happen if there is a 10lbs difference - the commission would turn it down.
Some states won't let it go more than 7 lbs. Each state is different. There is no way - a sanctioned event would ever let a difference of 20lbs go. |

What we are trying to get at is that number of weight classes in the women's division should be expanded.

The women's division is marketable because the women look good. Not saying that women cant look good and be over 128lbs but the league wants the women to look like women. If a woman weighs 140-150 normally, they should be able to drop the weight with proper diet, exercise, and dehydration methods before weigh ins. I walk around at 175-178 and drop 10lbs just hitting mitts, jumping rope, and working the bag. When I weighed in for the May 3rd event in San Antonio I was 164 the next day I was 172lbs. |

I understand now. It is a show. It does not matter how good you are at your chosen martial art as long as you look good doing it. I have a tough time with point fighting anyway. The points are awarded on whether or not you hit your opponent. It does not matter if you use your chosen martial art overall to hit and defend or if you are skilled at all as long as you hit your opponent.
Even the guys professing to be Kung Fu trained are point fighters instead of continuous fighters. In Kung Fu we are trained to mix it up continuously for 3 minutes. Check out Forbidden Kingdom. We are always pressing flesh. If not you lose. I have seen many WCL fights where the fighters will hang back and run in and run out waiting for what looks like an opening. Again it is show business. I did not mean to waste your time.
Thanks and good luck to all.

Every fight organization is a show. This Is Entertainment. Thats why they give bonus money for KO of the night, Fight of the Night, Spectacular KO, etc... People want excitement.
If you want your wife to fight she can lose the weight with diet, exercise, and DEHYDRATION. Every fighter dehydrates before pro fights. Thiago Alves from UFC drops from 200 lbs to 170 to fight. It takes about 6-8 weeks to lose that much healthy.
Whether you go to boxing, UFC, WCL, etc... Its about the exciting fighters and marketing. |
