Final Decision Regarding the Thompson vs. Daniels Protest
By a vote of 2-1 the independent protest hearing board upheld the original referee’s decision of TKO victory for Raymond Daniels.
The three person committee was comprised of Colorado State Athletic Commission Director Josef Mason, Florida State Athletic Commission Director Tom Molloy and retired World Champion / Tiger Schulman’s Franchise Founder Danny Schulman. Texas Commission representative Rudy Vasquez, originally selected to be part of the board had to disqualify himself due to a request by the Texas Commission.
The committee members were provided with the written protest submitted by Philadelphia Fire coach Ray Thompson, a copy of the WCL official rules and a video of the incident in question. After careful review, the majority opinion stated was, “there is not enough evidence of a foul that would have contributed to Stephen Thompson’s injury in order to justify overturning the decision that was made at ringside”.
All parties expressed concern for Stephen’s injury and extended their best wishes for his speedy recovery. |

First, I would like to share the committee's sentiment and best wishes to Stephen on his recovery. I hope he is back and fully recovered soon. Second, I think this is the right decision. The video that I saw was inconclusive and it looks like the videos that the committee saw were inconclusive, so we have to rely on the onsite officials. I also am glad that the decision of the onsite officials was upheld (I think that is the right precedent). With any luck, something like this will never happen again. Best of luck to the WCL, Stephen, and Raymond going forward. I am glad this is over and we can focus on next season.

I'm all for going with the ref at the time of the event. A call is a call. But as someone mentioned, I would like to see the official footage at some point (even if just to watch the event). Either way, let's hope you all can let this go and move on to a new season of bickering...er... discussion. :D _________________ -Valiss |

The fact that I use the word "accident" does not mean that I think there was no foul. Ask any cop, police officer Raymond Daniels for instance, he will confirm you that whenever there is an accident, there is always somebody who is responsible for it. |

I think Valiss and Jmm1 are spot on here. The official at the event needs to have the final word. That is how it shook out, so i am satisfied with the result of the protest. What happened at the fight sucked for both fighters and for the league, and the protest just kept bringing it to the forefront. Let's hope both of these guys will put this behind them and continue to have excellent careers in combat martial arts. |

I disagree. I don't see why protests should not be allowed. Officials at the event may be wrong, something may happen that they don't see. Giving the possibility to protest a bout is a common practice of many federations : when you look at the IKF site, for instance, one of the first mentions you see on the front page is "Bout protesting" (http://www.ikfkickboxing.com/RulesProtests.htm). |

Big Jack, you convinced me. Stephen took a dive and blew his own knee in the hope to have the great Raymond Daniels disqualified and to tarnish his reputation. |
