I have been watching the WCL for a period of time, and from years of seeing lots of diffrent Martial Arts, ranging from point-sparring in normal commonplace martial arts tournaments, from the gritty world that is UFC; I am curious what techniques or experience that the 'average' WCL fighter has that makes the teams.
I am curious due to the fact that someday, when I am ready, I would like to tryout for a WCL team, and would dislike embarassing me and all of my experience so far.
All of the fighters I have seen so far(In WCL and otherwise.) seem entirely devoted to their fights, their conviciton is visible in their fighting: but I know very little about how the fighters got to where they were, and what continues to drive them to fight. This is just to share experience and mindsets. I appreciate anyone's response. |

| I can't speak on behalf of some of the fighters, but I train under Dale "Apollo" Cook, the coach for the Oklahoma Destroyers. Thomas Longace has been fighting for quite some time. He does alot of kickboxing matches here in Tulsa and a few boxing matches and has fought in Germany. I think his background is in Karate tho and then transitioned into kickboxing. Another fighter from Apollo's id David Vogtman. 3rd degree black belt I believe and has something like a 7-2 record against some very stiff opposition. |

Its pretty obvious what fighting styles you should practice just by watching the fighters. Stand up fighting styles: Sport Karate, Boxing, traditional kickboxing, Muy Thai...etc.
Understand, in each type of fighting you do you will have to adjust your stances and techniques to be good. You cannot do Sport Karate in a kickboxing ring against a good kickboxer and expect to win. The same goes for a Kickboxer wanting to do Sport Karate.
All styles have a weakness and if you study them all you will be a step ahead of the fighters who say "Sport Karate sucks". Or, "Sport Karate is just like Kickboxing so why should I bother with kickboxing".
By the way, basics will always win your toughest fight. |
