Running, sprint 1 minute, run 2 minutes, jog 1 then repeat for about thirty minutes...
Next we would spar, first two rounds were light technique sparring, next two rounds were fast sparring, then one combo round (speed/power/technique). The training round times started at one minute rounds, then we moved it up to two minute rounds. We ususally did two sets of this.
That was a cardio day.
Other days we did about a 45 minute session of working the heavy bag - in two minute rounds with 1-2 minute rests in between rounds - and then we did the sparring.
That was just the workout part of my training, learning new techniques, brazillian jiu jitsu, muy thai, and Tae Kwon Do would vary depending on what day it was and those classes were about an hour. |

30 second punching drill (as many punches as you can in 30 seconds)
then 20 burpees
then 30 second kicking drill (as many kicks as you can in 30 seconds)
then 20 burpees
then 30 second burst of punch and kick combos
followed by 20 burpees
rest for 30 seconds to a minute then repeat
you can do this for 3-6 rounds _________________ www.martialartsjamaica.com |
Anyone have good drills for two three minute rounds?
1. pump side( set the trap tag for position and get them to move hands),back in to out axe( slide through covering distance, smack the crap out of the target..their head!) jump revese side ( to the body..power shot) so you will be throwing 3 wicked fast kicks in one rotation.
2. back round to the leg( power shot), back hook punch to the head( come down on their head if there shorter) if they are the same hieght or taller go to the body with this punch)back axe to the leg( most people dont throw this because of the degree of difficulty but if you train yourself to do it it is 3-4 times more powerful then a regular leg kick.
3. you should really do theese two drills till exagushtion.
im me if you have questions or you have drills you think i might wanna try. |
Id'e stick w/ the running for endurance, you can break up the distance however you want, and do the jog/run/sprint thing. I also throw in some high knees for a 10-20 count, however you wanna do the count as well, in place of the short distant sprint. Everyone knows how hard it is to get your knee's up after a while of mixing it up. Then you can do some leg drills, like how many kicks in 30,45,60 and 90 secs.. You can figure out how you wanna put the power/speed in the sets of kicks. Work on close up fighting as well, you can always sneak a mean arse round kick to the body if you keep 'em busy w/ the hands. Do some plyometric training and reaction drills. Work on all boxing style punching drills. It's always good to use some type of checking and drawing-in strategy to lure them in to a good kick or punch. Use a lot of off the line tech. and side stepping to avoid back-peddling. To bad this wasn't closer 'cause i'de probably like to give it a go.
yeh, I started running a set if knee up before my kicking drills a few months ago. the guys were getting a little slacked in getting the knee high enough for high kicks, so we started running a set or two high knees before the kick drills. But I figure, if they end up getting into competition that allows knee strikes, they should alllready have the muscle town for a good knee strike. _________________ Author of "WarriorRage KickBoxing"

| GUYS LOOK DRILLS ARE DRILLS AND WHEATHER THEY ARE FIGHT DRILLS OR CONDITIONING DRILLS THEY ALL HAVE A VERY GOOD USE, AS I READ THROUGH THIS TOPIC THERE IS A LOT OF CRITISIM TOWARDS OTHERS TRAINING STYLES. AN OLD QUOTE DON'T KNOCK TILL YOU'VE TRIED IT WOULD APPLY. BUT FOR YOUR FIGHT HUNGRY WCL STYLE FIGHTER THERE ARE MANY PREPERATIONS THAT ARE NEEDED TO BE MADE. JUST ABOUT EVERYONE IS ON THE RIGHT PAGE AS FAR AS CONDITIONING GOES, HIGH VOLUME PUNCHING KICKING AND KNEES, BUT ALSO YOU MUST TRAIN IN THE FINER POINTS THAT YOU MAY WANT TO TAKE A LITTLE SLOWER AND AT ONE POINT CONCERTRATE ON EXPLOSIVENESS AND ON THE OTHER CONTOLLED FLOWING SWIFT STRIKES MIXING UP YOUR HANDS FEET AND KNEES AND PIN POINTING VARIATIONS BETWEEN HEAD, BODY AND LEGS. YOU GET THAT DOWN AND THE WCL MAYBE CALLING YOU UP ONE DAY. IRISH OUT |

Get a set of combinations to practice and repeat the drills continuously for 2-3 minutes as fast and as hard as you can for 5 rounds. _________________ www.martialartsjamaica.com |

| form, form, form. get the form right then work on speed and endurance. Leave getting sloppy for when your dead tired or have had too much to drink. |

Hi! I am new here and I thought I would jump right in. The punching drills will help develop muscle memory, tone and, stamina in the upper body. The horse stance develops power, stability, and stamina in thelower body. However, I have noticed that in the WCL matches that I have seen on TV that there is more emphasis placed on hitting than blocking. Even the one or two people claiming Kung Fu experience are point sparring.
As far as hand speed goes, I would place my Sifu against any boxer. That is just my opinion. In 3 years I ave not seen anyone hit him that he did not let hit him. Raw power is a wonderful thing but you have to actually connect for it to be effective.
Just my 2 cents.

There's a huge difference between boxing a brawling. Boxing is all technique generated from the trunk (identical to Asian martial arts , just a different route) , while brawlers use the upper body. Mized martial artists prefer boxing , wrestling and Brazilian Jiu - Jitsu because of the practicality and faster learning curve. Traditionalists don't tend to fare well against modern MMA because many of them do not train for pure combat , at least not in the same direct manner.
I'm certain your sifu is fantastic , but I no longer prefer to steep myself in Asian traditions. My sparring has improved greatly in the last two years since converting to Western style kickboxing, with a smattering of grappling should I be forced to fight on the ground. |
